A Different Kind of Healing — Right Here in South Carolina

Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all. For many people — especially veterans, first responders, and those carrying deep emotional wounds — traditional talk therapy alone isn’t enough. That’s why American Detox & Treatment has partnered with Guiding Reins to bring equine-assisted therapy to South Carolina residents seeking a more holistic path to lasting recovery.

In the rolling landscapes of South Carolina, horses become powerful partners in healing. No prior horse experience required. No riding involved. Just you, a horse, and the beginning of something new.

What Is Equine Therapy?

Equine-assisted therapy is a clinically supported, experiential approach to mental health and addiction treatment. It involves working with horses — on the ground, not in the saddle — under the guidance of licensed mental health professionals and certified equine specialists.
Horses are remarkable animals. They are highly attuned to human emotions, responding to energy, body language, and emotional state in real time. This makes them uniquely effective therapeutic partners, helping clients develop:
    • Self-awareness — recognizing emotional patterns and behaviors
    • Trust and communication — building the ability to connect with others
    • Stress management — learning to regulate emotions under pressure
    • Confidence and empowerment — overcoming fear and self-doubt
    • Accountability — taking responsibility for one’s actions
Because horses respond honestly and without judgment, they often reflect back what clients struggle to see in themselves — creating breakthroughs that traditional therapy sessions may take months to achieve.

Who Is Equine Therapy Right For?

Our equine therapy program is woven into the broader continuum of care at American Detox & Treatment. It is particularly effective for individuals dealing with:
  • Substance use disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Job-related burnout and emotional exhaustion
  • Co-occurring mental health conditions
Equine therapy is especially powerful for:
  • Veterans and Active Military — Those who have served often struggle with PTSD, moral injury, and the isolation of transitioning to civilian life. The non-verbal nature of equine work bypasses many of the defenses that prevent verbal processing of trauma.
  • First Responders — Law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, 911 dispatchers, and other frontline professionals carry invisible burdens. Horses offer a confidential, judgment-free space to release what can’t always be put into words.
  • Families of Veterans and First Responders — The effects of trauma don’t stop at the person who experienced them. Family members who have supported someone through trauma deserve healing too.
  • Anyone in Addiction Recovery — Equine therapy complements detox and residential treatment by addressing the emotional roots of substance use, building the life skills necessary for sustained sobriety.
A Sanctuary For The Senses

Equine Therapy as Part of Your Treatment Plan

At American Detox & Treatment, we believe in treating the whole person — not just the addiction. Our integrated approach combines medical care with therapeutic modalities designed to heal mind, body, and spirit.
Equine therapy is offered as a complement to our core programs:

Medical Detox

Our 24/7 medically supervised detox provides a safe, comfortable foundation for recovery. Our licensed nurse practitioners and medical team manage withdrawal symptoms with compassion and clinical expertise.

Residential Treatment

After detox, our residential program provides structured therapeutic support, including individual counseling, group therapy, and experiential modalities like equine-assisted therapy. Here is where the deeper work begins.

Individual & Group Counseling

Our accredited therapists work one-on-one and in group settings to address the psychological dimensions of addiction and co-occurring conditions.
Equine therapy sessions, facilitated through our partnership with Guiding Reins, are available as part of individualized treatment planning. Our clinical team will work with you to determine whether equine therapy is a good fit for your recovery goals.

What Should I Expect in an Equine Therapy Session?
Many people come to equine therapy with questions and maybe a little skepticism. That’s okay. Here’s what a typical session looks like:
  1. Introduction and Safety Briefing
Your facilitating team will orient you to the environment and the horses. No experience with horses is necessary — and you will never be asked to ride.
  2. Ground-Based Activity
You’ll engage in structured activities with the horses — leading, grooming, observing, or completing specific tasks designed to draw out emotional responses and patterns.
  3. Processing with Your Mental Health Professional
After each activity, your licensed therapist helps you reflect on what came up during the interaction. This is where insights become breakthroughs.
  4. Integration
What you learn about yourself in the arena gets connected to your recovery goals, your relationships, and your life outside treatment.
Sessions are available in small groups or individual formats, and are tailored to each participant’s needs, comfort level, and treatment goals.
What Is the Science Behind Equine Therapy?
Equine-assisted therapy is more than an outdoor activity — it’s a clinically grounded modality backed by a growing body of research.
Horses are prey animals with highly developed social and emotional intelligence. They live in herds governed by trust, communication, and awareness — skills that parallel exactly what humans in recovery need to rebuild. Because horses respond to what’s happening beneath the surface, they are uniquely effective at helping people:
  • Become aware of unconscious emotional patterns
Practice regulating their nervous system in real time
  • Experience genuine, unconditional acceptance
  • Rebuild the capacity for trust after betrayal or trauma
Studies have shown equine-assisted therapy to be effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression, and in supporting the development of emotional regulation skills critical to long-term sobriety.
Do I Need Experience With Horses?
No. Zero prior horse experience is required. Our team will guide you through everything.
